Social Media: A cause of depression

Young people who use social networking websites often suffer from depression because of their friends' best lifestyles.

Montreal University research suggests that the more time teenagers spend in front of social media and television screens, the more they will experience symptoms of severe depression. During this study, more than 177 girls between the ages of 12 and 16 and over 2000 boys were used for social media use and television viewing for one year. Researchers have discovered that excessive use of social media can cause symptoms of depression in young people.

Researchers say social media and television are the types of media that most young people face in the current era and are less likely to be seen by other people their age. As a result, symptoms of depression gradually emerge, and to avoid this, it is important to reduce the amount of time spent on social media.

The results of this study were published in the medical journal JAMA Pediatrics. Earlier this year, research from Flanders University in Australia revealed that depression and other mental health problems can spread from one person to another, through social media.
